Starting college has led to lots of variety in the amount of sleep I get a night. I try my best to get at least 8 hours every night, as many studies have shown to be the most beneficial. However, some nights when I make the unwise decision to do assignments or study at the last minute, I will get a poor 4-6 hours of sleep before an 8:00 AM class. Here's the kicker, though, I have personally found it to be harder to get out of bed on the nights that I have slept the supposed healthiest amount and felt groggier throughout the day. And on the days that I get minimal sleep, I have felt more energized. This experience has made me question whether or not 8 hours of sleep is truly the healthiest and most restful amount of sleep.
Studies have shown that getting enough sleep at night lowers the risk of health problems such as diabetes and heart disease. Furthermore, sleeping enough helps regulate hormone levels and metabolisms. Essentially, not allowing your body to sleep enough will disrupt many body systems that need sufficient recharging before jumping into the next day. These findings confirm the importance of the 8 hours of sleep that one must sleep to live a healthy lifestyle. So why is it that I personally am not feeling these benefits?
